A strand of 17 ancient carnelian beads 52cms long, weight 171 grams. These beads have a lovely character with signs of wear. 
Beads of this kind have come from Djenné excavations. This city was on an ancient trade route. They are dated from the 9 to 13th Centuries. Most of them were made in India and traded to Western Africa and Asia by Islamic merchants.
