These are ancient excavated eye beads found in Mali, specifically in the caravan towns of Timbuktu, Mopti, Djenne and Gao. They vary in design and wear, and iridescence, and are thought to be somewhere in between 600-1000 years old, or more.
The idea of averting the 'evil eye' is an extremely old concept, all across North and West Africa and the Mediteranian.
There are two strands of 56 graduated beads here of slightly different qualities, please look carefully at the photos to see what sort of condition they are in as they vary from very crisp to more worn. Mainly blue but some green.
