A stunning polished silk and cotton vintage ikat kaftan or dress late 19th century from Ferghana Valley region. This is a one size fits all robe and the sleeves are long and unfinished.
This kind of silk is shiny because its polished with large polishing stones after its woven. The whole process of making this silk was very labour intensive. The silk threads would be tie dyed with the pattern before the weaving.
This is a strong silk as its woven with cotton. Chemises like this were worn loose and with silk coats. The russle of silk was all around and people would spend a great deal of their income on their silks. Appearance was everything.
