Rare and collectible 19th century adras Ikat chemise from around 1870. This is called 'adras' a dense plain weave fabric with a silk warp and cotton weft. It was originally polished to a high sheen afterwards with large polishing stones. The sheen is still there but faded a little.
It has been cleaned. There is some darkening from wear towards the shoulders and collar. It is still very wearable. The collar and cuffs are unfinished but this is how it would have originally been worn. The sleeves are overlong, they would have been folded back. The purchase of the material for the original owner would have been expensive. Silks were highly prized. This chemise would have been worn under a silk coat.
