A very special and rare item. This is a 19th century carved coral, enamel and aquamarine gem bracelet from Safranbolou which was once Greek and is now a Turkish city. It became wealthy from Saffron growing in the Ottoman period. It has a repair to the rear where the chain affixes to the plaque. It means it hangs far better when worn. The corals carved in this way were a feature of the jewellery which came from this area.
When closed on the wrist the size is 17cms/7ins long, its closed diameter is around 7cms. Length of plaque 5,5cms or 2 1/4 ins. It would have originally been gilded. You can still see traces of gilding.
