An antique silk suzani from the late 19th century from the Samarkand/Shahrisabz region. Chain stitch floral design, with chain stitched border.
There is wear to the orange silk which I have photographed, but it can still hang as a whole piece and would make a very reasonably priced starter collection piece of these wonderful and rare Central Asian silk textiles.
Arched hangings like these served as a bed cover for the new bride and groom and were also used to cover niches and arched alcoves which were set into rooms, often containing teapots, plates or other textiles.
The back is edged in ikat silk and backed with block printed Russian cotton.
